Molokai’s official flower is the white kukui blossom, its official color is green and its nickname is ‘The Friendly Island’.
Molokai is Hawaii’s fifth largest island. It is 38 miles long, 10 miles wide and roughly rectangular in shape, with a land area of 264 sq. miles.
Molokai is split into two main geographical areas. The low western half is very dry and the soil is heavily denuded due to grazing by goats and poor land management practices. It lacks significant ground cover and virtually the entire section is covered in non-native kiawe (Prosopis pallida) trees. One of the few natural areas remaining almost intact are the coastal dunes of Moʻomomi, which are part of a Nature Conservancy preserve.
The western half of Molokai is dry and arid, with rolling hills and the gradually sloping range of Maunaloa (1381 feet). The island’s highest point, Kamakou (4970 feet), is in the middle of the rugged eastern half.
The largest town on the island is Kaunakakai, which is one of two small ports on the island. Molokai Airport is located on West Molokaʻi.
The north shore and eastern shore are spectacular, but for the most part the steep slopes and rainforests are virtually impenetrable. This is where the famous leper colony was located.
Molokai is the most Hawaiian of the main islands, with almost 50% of its population of native Hawaiian ancestry. It’s sparsely populated, with but a handful of small towns. This is a place to get in touch with basics
Leper Colony At Kalaupapa
Molokaʻi is known as the long time residence of Father Damien de Veuster, a Belgian priest and canonized Roman Catholic saint who cared for sufferers of Hansen's Disease, also known as leprosy. Historically, a small north shore colony on Molokaʻi, Kalaupapa, was a refuge for sufferers of Hansen's Disease, but there are no active cases of Hansen's Disease on Molokaʻi today. Those who continue to live in the settlement are patients who chose to stay after the segregation policy was lifted in 1969.
Halawa Beach Park
There are two beaches at Halawa Beach Park , Kamaalea beach and Kawilli Beach. It's a wonderful place to visit. The view of the ocean and the neighbor island of Maui is amazing. During the winter, it is a popular spot for big wave surfing but not good for swimming. Both beaches are usually calm enough for swimming in the summer.
