The Big Island has a variety of attractions for the Nature Lover. From the beaches which range from white, green, or black sand, to the mountain top which has snow in the winter, to the hot lava flow of the volcanoes. And of course there are all the historical, artistic, and cultural aspects of the island as well. It is the youngest island and still growing as the hot lava dumps out into the ocean extending the land mass of the island.
Getting to The Big Island (The Island of Hawaii)
Direct flights from the U.S. mainland to the Big Island to Keahole Airport in Kona are available on United Airlines. The Big Island also boasts a Concorde flying in to Kona.
Aloha Airlines, Island Air, Big Island Air, and Hawaiian Airlines service the Big Island from other islands, both to the Kona airport and the Hilo airport.

Local Transportation on the island of Hawaii
Rental cars are readily available from Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Hertz, or National.
Taxi fares, typically, from the Keahole Airport to Kailua-Kona and the Keauhou area are $16-$20, and to Waikoloa, around $32.00; and from the General Lyman Field Airport, just outside Hilo, to the Hilo area, $7-$10.
In the Kailua-Kona and Keauhou areas, the Alii Shuttle offers a daily bus service, between 7.45 a.m. and 10.00 p.m.; fare is $1.00 one-way. Also, the Hele On bus service offers island-wide transportation, Mon.-Sat. Fares range from 75¢ to $6.00, depending on the length of the ride. Bus schedules are available from the County of Hawaii, Transit Agency, Hilo; (808) 935-8241. This information will be useful in planning your Hawaiian vacation if you are not planning to rent a car.
