Natural Hawaii

The island of Kaua'i is known as a "spiritual" island. In the system that classifies the Hawai'ian islands according to chakras, it is the third eye (sixth chakra). Thus it has connotations and connections in the realm of intuition and awareness. On the North Shore of Kauai, you will find many healers, artists, and writers in residence. And of course the beautiful Napali coast. The South Shore has its own share of beautiful beaches, and the whole island is a pleasure to visit. Check out the wonderful farmer's markets at various locales on the island for wonderful local and organic produce.

Getting to Kauai, Hawaii

Commercial flights arrive and depart at Kauai’s Lihue Airport. Some commuter flights are also available to and from the island’s Princeville Airport, on Kauai’s North shore.

Local Transportation within Kauai

Rental cars are available from Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Hertz, and National, as well as several smaller local companies.

Taxi fares from Lihue Airport, typically, are $30 to Poipu, $15-$20 to Kapa’a, $55-$60 to Princeville, and $65-$70 to Hanalei.

A regular scheduled bus service runs from Hanalei on the North shore to Kekaha on the South shore. There is no stop at the airport but one can walk a couple of very long blocks to Walmart to catch the bus. Or one could also take a cab to Walmart (a less tiring proposition with baggage and the tropical sun), and from there catch the bus.

Please note that Kauai's buses do not run on Sundays or holidays, and also stop running somewhere between 5:30 pm and 6:30 pm depending on the location. Schedules are available at their office in Lihue, as well as on the buses themselves.

Media on the island of Kauai

Free tourist magazines such as This Week, Gold Publications, 101 Things To Do, and other pocket-sized guides full of ads, discount coupons, maps and sightseeing information abound for all the islands and one only has to look anywhere.

The Garden Island and The Kauai Times are the two major papers. The Penny Saver is a local buy and sell bi-weekly publication. The Natural Yellow Pages (online only) is a natural product & services directory that covers all islands.

Kauai has two AM and two FM radio stations. Cable TV is offered in many areas. KVIC shows a  video of Kauai sights 24 hours a day on cable Channel 3 or 12.
