Banzai Pipeline: Surfing's Big Waves

Banzai Pipeline

The Banzai Pipeline is named for the the reef break "Pipeline" and Banzi Beach. It is located on the north shore of Oahu in Ehukai Beach Park at Pupukea. It is know for it's hollow curls of water that surfers can "tube" ride.

There are four waves at the  Banzai Pipeline: The Left or First Reef, Backdoor Pipeline to the right, Second Reef further out, and Third Reef even further out with giant waves.

Banzai Pipeline Is Dangerous

When Pipeline is breaking at full size the challenge cannot be overstated. Numerous surfers  have been injured or killed at what is often called the world's deadliest wave. The average wave is 9 feet but can get much bigger.

The takeoff area is small where a large number of surfers congregate and local surfers often  work together to limit outsiders' access. While this is intimidating it has prevented additional fatalities and injuries by the inexperienced

The top surfing competitions at this spot are the Pipe Masters-Board Surfing, the IBA Pipeline Pro-Bodyboarding, and the Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic.

When The Pipeline is Calm

Spring and summer are the calmer months and when the waves are smaller and swimming, snorkeling, scuba, and jet ski are the order of the day.
